University of Greenwich Ethical Food and Fairtrade Fortnight 2023
As a Fairtrade accredited university since 2011, the University of Greenwich will host its annual Ethical Food and Fairtrade Fortnight (EFFF) from Monday 27th February to Sunday 12th March. The fortnight helps to raise awareness of the sustainability impacts of food and what we as individuals and as an institution can do to help people make better choices.
The University recognizes the importance of creating opportunities for students to get involved with Fairtrade initiatives and is committed to ensuring engagement with both its student, staff and the wider community. As a result, the University has continually supported EFFF for several years through hosting many different successful events to highlight the issues in food systems and agriculture, as well as by serving and selling Fairtrade tea, coffee, juices and snacks throughout its cafes. Previous Fairtrade Fortnight events have included expert talks about Slow Food, Fairtrade & Business, Disposable Culture and Vegan Diets, Fairtrade Stall, Fairtrade Bake Off’s and much more – check out our past event highlights.
This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight will focus on this simple message: making the small switch to Fairtrade supports producers in protecting the future of some of our most-loved food and the planet. This is because climate change is threatening the livelihoods of the many communities that we rely on to produce our food. Choosing Fairtrade means extra income, power, and support for those communities. In order to spread this message across the University, the Sustainability Team have collaborated with the student union, catering teams and accommodation teams to host several events throughout the two weeks. Events taking place this year include pub quiz nights, screenings of documentaries such as ‘The Dark side of Chocolate’ and ‘Rotten’, Fairtrade coffee tastings, Fairtrade stalls, nature and mindfulness sessions in our edible garden as well as weekly ‘Climate Cafés’ where students and staff are welcome to drop in, enjoy some Fairtrade coffee and tea and meet other likeminded individuals.
We are looking forward to seeing the turnout of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight and do hope people find these events exciting and useful.
