University College Cork's Bio Green Cafe is Ireland's first plastic-free restaurant.
Plastic drink bottles have been removed from the café, replaced with glass bottles and cans. Plastic sachets have been removed and replaced with reusable crockery containers. Chocolate bars are wrapped in paper wrapping. ​Fresh produce is delivered in returnable containers from the University's farm and local producer.
Customers will be charged 10 cents for compostable takeaway cups, 40 cents for compostable takeaway food containers and five cents for deli bar wrapping.
The café has an integrated water fountain system with built-in washing capability for students and staff to use as well as an extensive recycling and waste segregation area.
