Reuse Race

Simon Goldsmith, Head of Sustainability at the University of Greenwich outlines the success of their new cup reuse initiative.

The Reuse Race is an initiative we run at Greenwich that incentivises students and staff to use reusable hot drinks containers instead of single use disposables.

Originally created and developed by two of our graduates and delivered in February & March 2018 the initiative promotes collective behaviour – the more people buy hot drinks in reusable containers (ceramic mugs and ‘Keep Cups’) the bigger the discount. This project is a Finalist in the Green Gown Awards 2018 (Food & Drink category).

See what great results were achieved in the infographic on the right.

We will be running the Reuse Race again at our catering outlets  in November 2018.

The impact of this initiative is significant, is cost neutral and provides great positive engagement. This case study provides further information about the pilot.

The project can be easily replicated by other cafe’s and we will be producing a ‘How to’ guide shortly to help others develop their own projects. Email sustainability@gre.ac.uk for information.
