#LoveOurColleges Day 4 - Health & Social
About Colleges Week
Colleges Week is a time of celebration and appreciation for the invaluable role that further education institutions play in our society. As we participate in the #LoveOurColleges campaign, which is led by the Association of Colleges, we are delighted to celebrate our members that are making a significant difference to sustainability in the sector. Sustainable practices make colleges stand out and EAUC is proud to showcase that!
The celebrations last for two weeks, from 9th to 22nd October, with each week adopting a different focus. Today's theme is Health & Social, so who are we featuring?
Does sustainability and health have a link?
Although there is a growing evidence base around environmental sustainability in health and social care, there are many unanswered questions. This theme links strongly to the two-way relationship that care and environment share, and taking a sustainable approach to health should deliver equitable outcomes and engage all people.
Example – Glasgow Kelvin College
Recently, the Outdoor Adventure Sport students took the lead in planning and running cycle events on campus to promote active travel. After attending cycle repair classes and becoming certified Cycle Ride Leaders, two groups of students planned, promoted, and led a ride for staff during a Staff Development Day along the Glasgow Canals.
Many people participated who, because of the event, expressed greater confidence with cycling; moreover, at multiple staff members started commuting to the College by bike (who had not previously chosen that mode of transport). With the help of their Glasgow Kelvin Velocity Cycle Hub, the community are supported to participate in the sustainability agenda.
The College's actions on active travel and sustainability have even led to be recognised as one of the top performers in this year's UK National Planet Earth Games.
