NUS has a history of commercial activity to lead market change. They founded the first student travel company (NUS Travel) to help students travel, the first student insurer (Endsleigh) when students couldn't get insured, and established their own purchasing consortium (NUS Services) through which they have constructively engaged with some of the world's biggest brands on ethical issues of concern to students.
Three years ago NUS acquired Epona, an importer of Fairtrade clothing for students. They made the acquisition so they could have more influence on the supply chain, and create a living wage range of clothing for students.
Last week, Jamie Agombar, Head of Sustainability at NUS, led a delegation of student officers to India to meet the people in the supply chain, and see how Epona is getting on with its living wage plans.
