Why do we have Sustainability Associates?

The EAUC has formed a strategic partnership with SUMS Consulting to offer tailored sustainability consulting services expressly designed for the higher education and further education sectors. It is our pleasure to now present the experienced, passionate and driven individuals that can support your institution's unique sustainability needs.

With sustainability now increasingly central to how institutions handle and report their data, we trust these brand new Associates will serve to enhance the efforts and interests of universities and colleges.

Richard Howarth

Richard Howarth

Sustainability Associate

Dr Richard Howarth is a multi-award winning author, reviewer/ judge, educator and Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Nottingham Business School, NTU. Richard has supported sustainability developments at University, Department/Subject, Course and Module levels. His research focuses on responsible marketing and marketer behaviour, ESD, employability and related approaches and interventions.

For over 15 years Michael has been leading a small team of carbon reduction professionals helping precipitate change within UK organisations. Focuses include future fit energy and carbon management, building strong business cases for action, considering additional benefits, exploring collaborative solutions, and smart use of data & infrastructure.

With over 12 years experience as Director of Estates at the University of Oxford and was responsible for providing vision, leadership and management to ensure the effective and efficient development and delivery of Estates related services within the University’s estate whilst contributing to the University’s wider strategic development. 

 

Lauren Pearson

Lauren has been working for Orbital South Colleges (OSC) in the Surrey/London area for the past five years and as the Sustainability Coordinator has had an integral role in developing practices throughout teaching and learning as well as within the student voice.
 

Dr Peter Rands

Peter brings 34 years of diverse experience from the HE sector, in ICT, project leadership and since 2010 in building capacity and delivering whole-institution strategic change for sustainability. His approach is collaborative and creative, focused on ways of authentically integrating sustainability into policy and practice, developing individual and collective leadership.

Dr Georgina Gough

Georgina Gough is Professor of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at UWE Bristol. She is a recognised expert in academic leadership of ESD across the higher education sector and a passionate advocate for holistic and collaborative approaches to sustainability. She holds roles with several national organisations and sits on UWE’s Academic Board and Board of Governors.
 

Dr Nicola Kemp

Nicola brings a diverse range of experience from within HE and more widely in building capacity and delivering strategic change in sustainability. Her approach is creative and collaborative, focused on ways of authentically integrating sustainability into policy and practice.

Rachel Ward

Rachel has 25 years’ experience advising and leading organisational change, delivering and embedding carbon reduction, environmental management and improved sustainability. She is a Chartered Energy Manager.

Michele Morley

Michele Morley

Sustainability Associate

Michele has worked in the environmental sustainability field for over 25 years.  Originally working in environmental management consultancy, then the private sector, delivering Environmental Management Systems and leading on large infrastructure projects such as the Millennium Dome and Heathrow Terminal 5.  She joined the HE sector in 2016, leading the Oxford Brookes Sustainability Team, developing the university’s environmental sustainability strategy, their ISO14001 Environmental Management System, Transport, Biodiversity, Engagement, Water, Waste and Food policies/ strategies, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  She is a passionate advocate for the role the HE sector can play in embedding positive sustainable change.
 

Katy Boom

Katy has led the development of wide-ranging sustainability initiatives at the University of Worcester. Her work focuses on the campus, working in the community and embedding sustainability in the curriculum. Overseeing the development of students as partners on major sustainability change programs and building sustainability skills with students and student volunteers, Katy’s work has won several national and international awards. Katy's research interests include frameworks for measuring sustainability culture in higher education, managing energy in student-rented homes, creating an online magazine for students, academics, and practitioners to engage students in sustainable development, and developing bike share schemes. An EAUC fellow and Board member for Change Agents UK. 

Arthur Shearlaw

Arthur Shearlaw is a trained teacher and has spent over 10 years working for schools, colleges, charities, NGO’s and universities delivering sustainability and climate focussed projects to young people. This has led him to have a good understanding of the intersect between the education and sustainability sectors and what is needed to ensure young people are equipped with the skills and knowledge to tackle an increasingly uncertain future. He has experience of working in Higher Education, delivering multiple projects aimed at inspiring the next generation of climate leaders, including collaborations across London universities. Arthur is an expert facilitator and is a strong advocate for young people's voices, particularly in the climate space. Most recently he has founded his own organisation, Climate Jams, aimed at empowering young people to be catalysts for change by providing opportunities to tackle climate and sustainability challenges in a real-world setting.
 

Dewi Day

Dewi Day is a specialist on decarbonisation and net zero within the HE sector. He has been working at Aberystwyth University since 2017 as their Energy and Sustainability Advisor. He has over 15 years of experience in the sustainability industry, including roles in in energy management, environmental management systems, water quality and waste management. 

Andrew Reeves

Andrew is an Associate Professor at De Montfort University, where he has led institution-wide initiatives on Education for Sustainable Development since 2017.
Among his numerous responsibilities, Andrew leads on the Environmental Sustainability theme of the Civic Universities Agreement for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and chairs the East Midlands Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) in Education for Sustainable Development.

Andy is an experienced, authentic, collaborative senior leader with expertise in sustainable development, estate strategy, planning and management. His particular interests include strategic estate planning, sustainability, local government, policy and leadership.
 

Harriet Waters

Harriet Waters

Harriet has over 20 years’ experience in sustainability, mostly in the higher education sector. In her current role as Head of Environmental Sustainability at the University of Oxford, she developed an ambitious and comprehensive strategy with supporting business case to cover a fifteen year programme of £200m investment to achieve net zero carbon and a net gain in biodiversity by 2035. 

John Thorne

Since 2013, John has been the Sustainability Coordinator at Glasgow School of Art. He is an environmentalist working with students and staff on environmental and social justice issues across the estate, but most importantly within the curriculum.

With over 21 years of experience as a sustainability practitioner in corporate and the further and higher education sectors, Kirsti brings her understanding of the wide view of sustainability strategy, operations, change management and engagement.

Mark Charlton

Mark has vast experience in public engagement to enhance research and applied teaching using volunteering and service-learning to champion sustainability, with expertise in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Patrick has been a senior leader in a number of universities, and has been driving forward the sustainability and social justice agendas for the past 20 years. He can therefore bring experience of embedding sustainability in an organisation’s strategy, provide advice on how to engage all staff and has been the executive lead on a number of major sustainability projects.

Paul is a specialist in environmental management and organisational carbon reduction. His areas of expertise cover; leadership, development and delivery of sustainability strategy, policy and implementation plans, stakeholder engagement, change management and sustainability governance.

Peter Phelps

Peter Phelps

Peter has worked in HE for 15 years and leads a new initiative within the Vice-Chancellor’s Office to implement the ‘whole institution’ Climate Action strategy, and heads up a team of change managers, sustainability professionals and academics who are embedding our response to the climate emergency throughout the University and beyond. Prior to this Peter was a project manager, environment advisor and change management specialist in the manufacturing sector, including optimising plasterboard factories across Europe, being a Six Sigma Black Belt in the white goods sector, and running the largest beer can factory in New Zealand. An engineering graduate of Bath, he also studied Environmental Management at the University of Auckland.
 

Petra Molthan Hill

Petra is a multi-award-winning internationally recognised expert for Climate Change Mitigation Education and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management and can support clients in developing their own GHG management, setting up strategies and policies and training their employees in climate literacy. Her special focus is on climate change mitigation education and how this can be integrated into the curricula of all disciplines. 
 

Rosemary Horry

Carbon reduction and sustainability are becoming key to the operations of the HE/FE sector, and Rosemary can support in the delivery of projects to assist this objective. Rosemary set up the Environmental Management System at the University of Derby to take the University to the level of and attained ISO 14001 certification.
