Staff from Durham University Catering are celebrating after being awarded a top three star rating for their commitment to sustainable food provision.
The award from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) is regarded as the equivalent of a Michelin Star of Sustainability, and Durham is one of only three UK universities to receive this rating.
Shona Millar, Director of Catering at Durham University, said:
“This is a great achievement for the Department and along with our other sustainability awards, further re-enforces our passion and on-going commitment to improving the sustainability of our catering services“
Durham University achieved the maximum three stars by completing the rigorous and wide-ranging assessment that covers the three pillars of sustainability – Sourcing, Society and Environment. The assessors found the catering department, which has over 500 staff and delivers over 400,000 meal per month, to be forward thinking and innovative in their approach to sustainability.
