Lucideon is pleased to announce that it has recently certified Keele University’s Energy Management System (EnMS) to ISO 50001. Keele University is an EAUC Educational Member.
One of the first universities in the UK to have its EnMS certified to the internationally-recognised standard, Keele University, with the help of the energy management specialists, digitalenergy, implemented the EnMS in order to achieve continual improvement in energy performance.
The University’s Energy Management system currently covers a combination of academic buildings, classrooms, lecture theatre, restaurant/cafe, teaching labs, kitchens and the estates activities for the academic buildings and encompasses the work environments of approximately 1650 staff and 10000 students.
A Gold Company Member of EAUC, Lucideon has worked extensively with the education sector, both to certify management systems and to provide sustainability assurance, including verifying carbon footprints and sustainability reports. In addition, Lucideon is the leading greenhouse gas emissions verification body for the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme meaning that its auditors have extensive knowledge of energy-intensive industries and of the environment.
Tim Watts, Operations Manager at Lucideon, says:
‘With rising energy costs, proactive energy management is a necessity for any university these days. As well as helping to manage energy better, focusing on this area also leads to environmental benefits, such as the reduction of carbon emissions, something which prospective students factor into their choice of where to study.
‘Keele University has done a great job in implementing their EnMS with support from digitalenergy in less than 12 months and by opting to have it certified, they’re not only showing that it stands up to scrutiny, they’re also investing in the improvements which continual monitoring brings.’
Lucideon is currently involved in UKAS’ pilot assessment programme for accreditation of certification of EnMS to ISO 50001. Lucideon and digitalenergy’s webinar, ‘ISO 50001 - The Energy Management ‘Must Have’ in HE/FE’, can be seen on EAUC’s Sustainability Exchange - www.sustainabilityexchange.ac.uk
