Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales’ inaugural Sustain Wales Awards ceremony was held at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on 19 November to an audience of national and international businesses and champions of sustainability in Wales. The aim of the Awards were to celebrate and highlight the excellent work being done in Wales and the evening was filled with entertainment from actor and host, Rhodri Hugh Thomas.
Hallam Amos, Wales international Rugby Union and Newport Gwent Dragons player, opened the awards and outlined his strong interest in sustainability and the benefits that sport can bring to society.
The main sponsor Welsh Water / Dwr Cymru was joined by a host of category and ceremony sponsors including Melin Homes, The Open University, Pick Everard, Interserve, LivEco, IntroBiz, the Welsh Rugby Union/Wales Millennium Stadium, the University of Wales Trinity St David, the Wales Millennium Centre and Yoke Creative.
Peter Davies, Commissioner for Sustainable Futures, was presented with the special award of Sustainability Champion by Jane Davidson on behalf of the University of Wales Trinity St David. Peter Davies said “I was honoured and surprised to receive an award last night. It was a great evening and I am pleased to see recognition for the work done by individuals, organisations and communities in this field. It is important that we share what people are doing and thank those that are leading the way in improving Wales for future generations”.
The awards were a chance to reward and highlight the great things people and organisations are doing on sustainable development. Cynnal Cymru aims to seek out and praise the best examples of their kind, cross-sector, across Wales. Today Cynnal Cymru, as the leading organisation for sustainable development in Wales, are holding a roundtable to ensure the winners, finalists and sponsors continue the collaboration which could lead to tomorrow’s innovative and sustainable solutions.
The inaugural Awards ceremony, promises to become a great event in the Welsh calendar. Derek Osborn, Cynnal Cymru Chair said “It is an exciting time for Cynnal Cymru with the successful awards supported by great organisations from Wales and internationally. It was an evening of celebration which we hope will be followed by a year of collaboration, and we are all excited about what may come from these great organisations and individuals working together.”
