2020 Climate Group Launch the Waste Pledge

Scotland's 2020 Climate Group has launched the Waste Pledge. The Pledge is to encourage organisations in Scotland to adopt the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 six months early. Already over 40 organisations have signed the pledge, including Edinburgh Napier University, University of Strathclyde, Scotland's Rural College and Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Regulations require all non-domestic waste producers to take reasonable steps to ensure the separate collection of metal, plastic, glass, paper and card (including cardboard) from 1 January 2014. Food businesses in many parts of Scotland are also required to provide for the separate collection of their food waste by 2014 if they produce more than 50kg per week.

Ian Marchant, Chair of the 2020 Climate Group said “leading by example is one of our founding principles and adopting these Regulations early is a sensible decision, to address any initial challenges and share our experience and best practice. I would encourage all organisations in Scotland to show their support by signing up on our website and also review their waste streams and recycling arrangements to work towards compliance with the Regulations.”
 

With a number of Scottish institutions recently awarding contracts for general waste it is likely that many of you are already on the way to complying so please show support by signing the Waste Pledge. A number of workshops are being delivered to support you through this process. The next Waste Management Topic Support Network will have a session on the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 with a presentation from Zero Waste Scotland. The session will provide an opportunity to share experiences and good practice which is already taking place in the university and college sector. This event is due to be held in April.
