This EAUC Scotland event aims mainly to support those who have signed up to the Universities and Colleges Climate Commitment for Scotland (UCCCfS), but is also open to anyone who is thinking of signing up, or is wanting to know about reducing carbon emissions associated with their institution.

There will be a plenary session in the morning covering examples of carbon management programme experience, calculating carbon through travel surveys and reducing carbon emissions through waste reduction. It will also include a presentation on getting started. The afternoon will be made up of 2 workshops, and you will be asked to choose 2 of the following 3:
  1. Carbon Management Lite
  2. Cutting travel, cutting carbon
  3. Climate action planning
The Climate Commitment was launched in January 2009. Signatories have agreed to “harness our academic talents and expand Scotland's ability – through our research capacity, knowledge exchange activity and the provision of skills, modules and courses – to create solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.” All have committed to producing a 5-year Climate Change Action Plan by February 2010. Plans will include measurable targets and timescales to achieve a significant reduction in emissions from all business operations and activities, including:

  • energy consumption and source
  • waste reduction, recycling and responsible disposal
  • sustainable estate development
  • sustainable travel planning
  • responsible procurement of goods and services

Institutions will incorporate work on climate change into established improvement processes and will publish annual results on progress, detailing outcomes achieved and further actions required. This event will explore these measures and provide support and guidance to institutions in the planning and implementation stage of their 5 year action plans as part of their commitment.
