Data centres and the high powered equipment within them are crucial to just about all aspects of university and college activity. This includes computing to support the business, as well as scientific, research and high performance computing (HPC). Data centres use a lot of energy both to run the computers, to cool them down and secure the power supply. In many facilities, this is not done as efficiently as it could be done.
A major issue for university and college data centres is that in most places, data centre managers and facilities teams do not have the luxury of starting with a blank sheet, but must do their best with retrofitting less than perfect accommodation, while keeping production systems in operation.
This webinar will explore some of the key points to emerge from Jisc’s Greening ICT Programme in respect of data centres, and will feature input from Steve Bowes-Phipps, Data Centre manager at the University of Hertfordshire. Steve led the work that led to the university being the first in the UK to be judged as compliant with the UK Code of Conduct for Data Centres.
