Cutting cost and carbon emissions – CHP in Universities and the Public Sector

Scotland’s Universities and Colleges spend over £25 million a year on energy and most universities’ energy bills are several £million a year and rising.  So any reduction means more money for core academic objectives.

Over 160 other public bodies - obliged by the Public Bodies Duties under the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 - face similar challenges.  Generating their own energy through Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce energy bills and carbon emissions.

CHP and district heating networks produce lower cost, lower carbon heat and power – of increasing importance in a world of rising energy costs.  As an example The University's three energy centres cut over 10% / 8,500 tonnes CO2e emissions and generate £1.5m savings annually.

This free seminar for property managers across the public sector, and their advisers, will discuss the benefits and the practicalities involved.  The opportunity for using Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) to provide guaranteed savings with little or no capital expenditure will also be examined, as well as a variety of other funding options.   The event will:
  • Give a brief overview of CHP, district heating and trigeneration technologies
  • Examine case studies for CHP at a range of scales, using a variety of fuels
  • Explore financial incentives and policy drivers
  • Feature a tour of the George Sq Trigeneration scheme at the University
  • Include networking opportunities and a chance to quiz the experts.

Afternoon workshops will allow interest groups to meeting and share ideas / experiences. Speakers include:
  • Rebecca Carr, Senior Heat Policy Adviser, Scottish Government's Heat, Energy Efficiency and Low Carbon Investment Unit
  • David Somervell, Sustainability Adviser, University of Edinburgh
  • Allen Kenny, Estates Manager, Glasgow Caledonian University
  • Michael O’Neil, Craighall Energy
  • Prof Jan Webb, Heat and the City Project
  • Clarke Energy and Vital Energi invited

Presented by CHP Association members with support of SSN, EAUC Scotland, and AUE Scotland and hosted by the University of Edinburgh.
