How to influence behaviours using the ISM model (exchange)

In order to successfully influence the way people behave, it is crucial to recognise that all our behaviour is contextualised – within the values and attitudes that we hold, the habits we have learned, the people around us, and the tools and infrastructure available to us in our day-to-day lives. Research commissioned by the Scottish Government demonstrates that considering the individual level in combination with the social and material levels is likely to be more successful in influencing behaviour. This is the ISM Model.

This webinar provided an introduction to the ISM tool, which has been developed as part of the Scottish Government's Low Carbon Behaviours Framework to offer a practical way of considering and addressing the different factors which influence people’s behaviours.

The ISM model considers all of the contexts that influence people’s behaviours:
• the Individual (relating to e.g. individuals’ values, attitudes, habits)
• the Social (including considerations of social norms, role of opinion leaders, etc) and
• the Material (relating to e.g. infrastructure, technologies, rules and regulations) and the interaction between them.

While it's been developed for the Scottish Government, the framework can be used by anyone to plan and implement behaviour change programmes.
