Heritage Decarbonisation at Wadham College, University of Oxford, with Eyesea Green and Wadham College

Finalist, Digital Futures

About

The project pioneers a co-heating strategy emulating an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) for base heat with ceiling-mounted infrared (IR) panels for localised warmth. This is managed by the intelligent Eyesense platform, developed by Cambridge researchers, which uses occupancy tracking to activate heating only where needed. This innovative trio of technologies directly addresses the challenge of decarbonising historic buildings without invasive and costly fabric alterations, providing a groundbreaking, energy-efficient solution.

Top 3 learnings

1. We learnt that a shift from fabric-first to occupant-first think will unlock solutions applicable to many sectors.

2. Our concepts test heat pump viability through existing infrastructure at low cost before committing.

3. Our project builds evidence that retrofit at scale demands without major funding.

What it would mean to win

We will be thrilled to a Green Gown Award as a testimony to the hard work and dedication of our community to sustainability and our ongoing efforts to create a fair and just world for all.

SDGs

9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure
