Common Cause in Tertiary Education: Developing values-based approaches to planning, communication and engagement for sustainability in universities and colleges

Values represent our guiding principles: our broadest motivations, influencing the attitudes we hold and how we act. Our values have a powerful influence over our choices and Common Cause explores the influence of values on pro-sustainability action.

As well as influencing our behaviours and attitudes, values are connected to the way we understand the world. One way this connection manifests itself is through frames - mental structures that order our ideas and communicative tools that shape our perceptions and interpretations.

This Common Cause Workshop is relevant for those in the Tertiary Education sector involved in Governance, Leadership, Teaching, Research, Engagement, Estates and Operations. It will:

• Introduce participants to research on values and their impact on behaviour

• Introduce participants to research on frames and how they affect the meaning and influence of our communications

• Illustrate the implications of values and frames with practical examples

• Offer participants an opportunity to discuss the implications of this new understanding of values and frames for their work.

The workshop is led by Common Cause Fellows, Pam McLean and Osbert Lancaster, is hosted by Edinburgh University, and supported by the EAUC and the SDE Network.
