Youth Participation in Policy Decision-Making on Climate Change Communication and Education: Examples and Recommendations

February 11, 2022, 09:30 IST/15:00 AEST

Recent waves of civil activism around the world have highlighted that increasing the quantity of quality climate change education is of utmost importance to many young people.

It facilitates their shift from being amongst the most vulnerable to being leaders of change. The activism has also demonstrated youth as powerful contributors to systemic change that can drive climate action globally. Youth can bring fresh and innovative perspectives to climate change education and communication decision-making and policy processes. They can lead their communities and contribute valuable expertise to international policy forums by promoting values of intergenerational justice and equity.

However, youth have often been sidelined from conversations about developing solutions to climate change, and their contributions can be overlooked by policy- and decision-makers. This webinar will showcase examples of youth participation in policy and decision-making processes related to climate change education at intergovernmental and local levels. It will explore barriers and enablers for effective participation and share key recommendations for anyone who is seeking to enable or increase youth participation in policy- and decision-making related to climate change education.
